The Greek word anathallo means “To renew, cause to grow, or bloom again,” which is an appropriate umbrella for the band of that name. The band’s music is hard to categorize but yet familiar, experimental yet accessible and often focuses on the themes of renewal and redemption.

In 2004, the band recorded an EP simply entitled “Hymns,” a surprisingly sparse and traditional take on six hymns. The short release demonstrates the band’s loving attention to detail and the creation of ambience and emotion, not simply through the lyrics but also the music itself. Incorporating many of the harmonies and odd instrumentations of their other releases the release, for the most part, remainins true to the hymns themselves and honoring their content. The presentation is both humble and heartfelt, something missing in many “worship” recordings of late.

This was a limited release with all proceeds going to support a homeless mission. It remains out of print (and from what I understand, will not be reprinted) and therefore remains a mystery to many. I was lucky enough to purchase one of the few available copies several months ago and with the band’s permission, I am making the entire release available for download.

Download:

  1. It Is Well With My Soul
  2. I Need Thee Every Hour
  3. Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy
  4. All Creatures of our God and King
  5. Before the Throne of God
  6. What Wondrous Love is This?

Enjoy and please thank the band for their generosity.

Brent,

I can always count on you for good music to broaden my horizons. These hymns are great!

Ha ha Rick. (Inside joke here).

They were unbelievable in concert tonight in Louisville! Only downside was that they didn’t play for very long (the third of three “opening bands”). Can’t wait to see them again, and I will see them again…

Brent on March 22nd, 2006 at 7:35 am #

Aren’t they great?! They really have something unique going. They all recently quit their jobs to try to make the band a go full-time, so this is an important time for them. They also just signed to play one of the stages at Lollapalooza!

I love this EP. I can really sense God’s presence through these songs. Anathallo has an amazing ability to sound powerful, intricate, and fragile and human all at the same time. Thank you Anathallo.

Anathallo - Hymns…

The band Anathallo makes their out of print EP ‘Hymns’ available for free download….

greg on July 16th, 2007 at 8:42 pm #

anathallo makes music worth listening to. I had the pleasure of seeing them outclass dashboard confessional in latrobe, pa and was taken by their creativity… now i am taken by their renditions of the classics.

[...] To Renew, Cause To Grow, Or Bloom Again Through Hymns: Anathallo 13 10 2007 One of my buds, Charis, mentioned this blog, which provides (by permission of the band) free downloads of an EP by a group called Anathallo. Simply titled ‘Hymns’, it has some of the most moving renditions of such classic songs as ‘It Is Well With My Soul’ that I have ever heard. Go download. Listen. Worship. [...]

My daughter’s fiance has this cd and I love it. Thanks!

Ashley on November 23rd, 2007 at 3:45 pm #

Do you have to have Quicktime Pro in order to download these? If so, is there any other format you can put these in, where I can just save them to my hard drive? I would really appreciate it!

Brent on November 23rd, 2007 at 8:59 pm #

Ashley,

These should play with just about any mp3 software. I play mine in iTunes, but Quicktime will work. When you load the file, you’ll need to “save as” to a folder on your desktop. Let me know if there’s any other questions. Enjoy!

Ashley on November 25th, 2007 at 9:43 pm #

Hey Brent,

Well, the reason I asked is because I could never get to a link where it would let me download it, but I was using mozilla firefox before, and when i tried internet explorer it worked. Thanks so much for your help, though!

I only recently found out Anathallo was of a Christian background and finding this was such a blessing.. thank you
