How can someone be Commander in Chief when they view dependent life (which of course is all life, on some level) as a punishment.

  4. Comment by inWorship — April 2, 2008 @ 5:02 pm

    WOW!

I bet he is wishing he could take that one back…at least I hope he is.

  5. Comment by David — April 2, 2008 @ 7:03 pm

He said “punished with a baby… at age 16″

You know it would be hard, tough, almost a punishment to have a baby at that age, and lose your childhood. that’s all he’s saying.

Hey! Stop pickin’ on Obama. Didn’t you hear him say we should teach kids morals and such?!?

  7. Comment by Chris — April 2, 2008 @ 9:04 pm

I think it’s partly semantics…would have been different if he said he didn’t want his daughter to “have the negative consequence of having to raise a baby at 16″? I think there are much bigger issues to be concerned about with Obama than poor word choice…no need to flip out over this one if you ask me. What he said was not true biblically, but what did you expect?

    Rev …

That’s what I’m afraid of, questionable “morals and such.”

I’ll cut him at smidge of slack since he really seemed to be at a point of his talk where he couldn’t figure out what in the world he was supposed to be saying next.

Yet, his words express the thinking of far too many.

Thanks for sharing, Brent, and I have to say it.

If Obama wins in ‘08 … then the terrorists have already won.

That particular arrangement of words does not sound like a slip, or like a casually poor choice of words, but sounds as though it is the expression of a consistantly held position, a phrase repeated by himself or others, and believed. Most english speakers do not casually use such language, do not easily make such a slip.

This is just another example of how our culture views procreation. We want children but only on our specific terms: When, where, how man, what gender, etc. Outside the parameters of our preferences, they are viewed as an unwanted nuisance.

Gaffe or not, our biggest problem is how our culture largely rejects the Bible’s teaching that children are a reward, and are made in God’s image.

From another angle, I wonder if abortion would have emerged in the way it did if the church’s messages in previous generations about out-of-wedlock pregnancy had been more comprehensive. Unmarried sex should be called for what it is: ugly sin, even that brings shame. However, there should also be a discussion of the baby’s worth and about God’s ability work even a sinfully-conceived pregnancy to his glory.

So let’s say that Obama mis-spoke a bit and that he “didn’t want his daughter have the negative consequence of having to raise a baby at 16″ as has been suggested. The reality is that he’s willing to murder an innocent life to “protect” his daughter from the consequences of her actions. That’s still quite troubling, don’t you think?

    Lovely.

Even worse than calling unplanned pregnancy ‘a mistake.’

[...] Watch Obama as he actually uses the line “Punished with a Baby” in his speech [...]

  16. Comment by Mike Morrell — April 6, 2008 @ 5:47 pm

To commentor 13: He’s talking about contraception, not abortion. See why Frank Schaeffer thinks Obama is our best pro-life hope.

  17. Comment by Brent — April 6, 2008 @ 6:18 pm

I understand the immediate context of the comments, but I also understood them to be part of the larger context of Obama being the most liberal, most partisan and pro-abortion candidate ever, going so far as to, not once, but twice, vote to allow infanticide, twice opposing the “Born Alive Infants Protection Act.” I shudder if this is really our best “pro-life hope.”

Like they’re a plague or something. Too many people are deceived by this guy. Too many Christians have been snowed over. Makes me sick.

    i agree with pp 13.

“… The reality is that he’s willing to murder an innocent life to “protect” his daughter from the consequences of her actions. That’s still quite troubling, don’t you think?”

yup…i agree. and i suppose we should also get rid of laws that punish those for such actions as death due to drunk driving, so as not to ‘punish her for the consequences of those actions’???

i do think he was refering to some forms of abortion, such as the morning after pill, by his choice of words. he said “if she makes a mistake, i don’t want her punished” and the only way to prevent this “pumishement” after the fact is to some way end the life that was created.

also, almost all forms of birth control, especially hormonal contraceptives, prevent implantation as well as ovulation, so they often cause abortion of an early embryo. just something else to think about.

he clearly demonstrated his belief that the rights of the adults are more important to protect than the rights of the unborn children. very troubling.

I have two issues with this. First, the clip is a short one minute blurp lifted out of a speech to specifically beat him over the head about a phrase he used. Honestly, I can see the connection, because I know how difficult life becomes for a teenager who becomes a parent. In a perfect world, teenagers would not be having sex and would not be having babies. Folks, this is a fallen world. It happens. Using the word punishment to shortcut the series of consequences that happens to a teenager who gets pregnant should not make people start freaking out about how Obama is some whacked out radical who wants to turn your world upside down. He’s been there, and he knows how not fun it is to grow up poor.

Secondly, people are jumping to the conclusion that he is referring to abortion to solve the “situation”, when he actually was talking about teaching young people about contraception immediately prior to making that statement. I’m not quite sure how you can make that leap, based on this little clip.
