Music Saturday: Lightheaded

March 29th, 2008 by Brent

I don’t listen to much rap or hip hop (I’m not even honestly sure what the difference between the two is). This isn’t intentional. It’s not something I purposely avoid, it’s just that I honestly haven’t heard much of the genre that I care for. So much of what’s found in the mainstream is simply shallow at best and downright depraved at worst.

But I recently came across a group called Lightheaded that I’m quite impressed with. I originally came by them because a friend recommended one of their members’ solo work to me. His name is Ohmega Watts. I was hooked and began to look a bit deeper and discovered that he was a part of this group as well.

Based out of Oregon, the group is made up of long-time friends Braille, Othello and Ohmega Watts (why is it that rappers always get better names than theologians?), each of whom have solid solo releases of their own. First up is the official video for their track “Soul Power:”

Next is a short documentary piece on the group by Enoch magazine:

I think I know why you’re drawn to these guys, Brent. It’s the UPS driver theme.

By the way, I’ve gotta say that there are some tough theologian names. Luther, Calvin, KNOX baby!!!

    Schleiermacher?… I don’t think so!

Seriously, let’s get a thread going of the top theologian names that could double as MC’s.

I did have some good days at UPS. Or was that nights? Where’s my UPS boys? Kyle? Micah? Nathan? Give a shout out for the 3:00am theology discussions while slinging boxes!

There are no more exciting discussions than a little open, closed, close communion with three hours of sleep!!! Now does 38024 go to the brown belt or the yellow?!

LOL, yes Ohmega Watts is part of a large underground scene of hip-hop music. I would say it is the best stuff out there from a Christian perspective.
Glad you looked a little deeper to learn of the community of artists that works along with Ohmega. I’m happy you are enjoying the music.
Much like you, I’m not much into the hip-hop scene. But, I am all about supporting musicians who are doing this type of thing.
Playing in clubs with the message of Christ with superior musical craftsmanship to their counterparts.
