Come Waste Some Time With Me

Posted by Brent | Misc., Music, Reader Response | Saturday 10 February 2007 10:06 am

I was thinking the other day about how I used to do a feature here called “Come Waste Some Time With Me” in which I would pretty much waste your time (at least more than I usually do). It’s fun to have fun.

Forgive me ahead of time but I’m going to do that today. But that’s why I’m posting on a Saturday, a day I typically don’t. My wife and I were talking the other day about who we wish we could sing like. If you could sing like anyone, who would it be?

If I could sing like any man, it would be Lyle Lovett, Ted Hawkins or Morrissey and if I could sing like any woman it would either be Emmylou Harris, Karin Bergquist or Neko Case. What about you? Who would you love to sing like? Who has that voice you wish you had?

Connor, thanks so much, I’d not heard of Foy Vance before. At first listen I almost thought it was Kelly Joe Phelps. Great voice though, thanks. I’ll definitely have to look more into Vance’s music.

Thanks for the chance for a good laugh! Scott and I laughed out loud while we talked about who we would choose- definitely my idea of a great time waster. I’d love to really wail one time in my life and sound good, even if I was the only one who could hear me.

Jeremy Casella? As in the same guy that wrote You Whisper Something with Phil Keaggy?

Great song, man! I just got one of Phil’s DVD’s where he sings it.

Great work, Jeremy. The words really spoke to me. Musically, it conjures up images in my mind of early 60’s rock with jangly Rickenbackers.

How awesome that you’ve had this time with Phil! I’m a huge phan, owning more than 30 of his albums. As a bassist/guitarist myself, he is my hands-down favorite. We’re blessed that God raised him up in our times.

In my yearend blog post, I said about him:

I continue to be amazed at how this man displays both jaw-dropping talent AND meek, God-honoring character. A study of music history would show how rarely these two qualities intersect.

Natalie Grant. I love the warmth and fullness to her voice, how its strong and sure even when she sings soft and sweet, how it lilts and can be breathy, and when she digs and grinds the notes out. Beautiful. When she sings it sound easy and effortless. “Held” is one her best.

For the longest time I would have had to agree with you on Ted Hawkins, but now I’d have to go with William Elliott Whitmore and since it’s time we’re wasting then I’d have to throw in Trey Anastasio as well.
